Battered Men - The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence

Lies by Omission

Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence Gender-Polarizes a People Issue

Cooking the Data to Make a Case

The Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence has an axe to grind. Specifically, they work hard to gender-polarize the people issue of domestic violence, by ignoring the men ... even when they have to alter the results of national studies to do it.

Here is their misrepresentation of the National Violence Against Women study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice and Centers for Disease Control. It appears on their Web site, linked to their home page section "Domestic Violence Statistics for Washington State from our Fatality Review Project's new guide to working with the media."

"Approximately 1.5 million women are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States. Since many women experience multiple victimizations every year, an estimated 5.9 million physical assaults are perpetrated against U.S. women annually.

Source: Extent, Nature and Consequences of Intimate Partner Violence: Findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey, Patricia Tjaden and Nancy Thoennes for the National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control, 1998"

What that report really says:

"About 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States (exhibit 9)."
